South Sound U-Pick Berry Picking Guide

SUMMER PARENT RESOURCE GUIDE: Puyallup, Auburn, Tacoma

By Macaroni Kid Tacoma & South Sound July 10, 2023

If you haven’t been berry picking before with your kids, you’re in for a treat. This is a fun activity to pass a couple of hours in the summertime, and you return home with some healthy and delicious results. We are rich in options for different places to pick your favorites: blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Salmonberries, boysenberries, and blackberries are wild in our region and can be found on most roadsides and nature trails from June through September.

What to do with the bountiful berries you bring home?

  • Rinse and serve fresh with meals or for snacks out of hand.
  • Pop them into cereal or pancakes for breakfast.
  • Add them to a smoothie, or float them in a juice punch.
  • Bake them into any number of desserts, including my favorite, pie!
  • Freeze them for later, and enjoy them all year long.

U-Picks can be a fun experience for the family. Come prepared! Don't forget to bring:

  • clothes that you can get stained
  • sturdy shoes
  • buckets or bowls to transfer the berries into
  • sun protection
  • drinking water

Please call ahead to confirm availability and to make sure they are open this season and what restrictions may be in place with regard to COVID.

And don't forget, sharing is caring. At the bottom of this article, you can click the 'share on Facebook' button and it will share! You can also do it once you leave the article but this is easier to remember.

Canter-Berry Farms - Auburn

CANTER-BERRY FARMS is a small friendly blueberry farm 8 miles southeast of Auburn in the upper Green River Valley under the shadow of Mt. Rainier and a little more than a stone's throw from Puget Sound. Our farm, which was homesteaded in the 1870's, has been family-owned since 1954. In 1975, we, the second generation, began operating CANTER-BERRY FARMS. In 1983, we began selling our delicious blueberry products at Seattle's Pike Place Market where they became famous for their quality, freshness and true blueberry flavor. In January 2015 we retired from making those products but continue to offer at our Farm store our Blueberry wines and other gifts.
