The past six decades have witnessed the evolution of an exemplary music education organization recognized by youth symphony and professional orchestras nationwide for its artistic and business excellence. The nurturing familial atmosphere pervades the entire association – from management to the students themselves. This close-knit relationship has provided for the continuation of much-needed artistic support. Major conservatories and universities such as Curtis, Juilliard, the Cleveland Institute, and the San Francisco Conservatory recruit TYSA members because they respect the fact that these potential students have been through our program. Their experiences with our alumni have proven the solid technical and artistic nature of our teachings. Moreover, these institutions recognize TYSA students as dedicated, inspired musicians who are willing and very capable of serving others. This is the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association. It provides much more than music instruction. It is “home” to students, conductors, guest artists, educators, and administrators, and it is this family environment that has made it successful. Although alumni often become well-respected soloists, major orchestra members, and composers, many return “home” as coaches and teachers following their conservatory or college training to perpetuate this atmosphere of care and devotion.
