Amtraks Youth Ride FREE

By Gig Harbor & Mason County Macaroni KID/AI June 17, 2024

Amtrak has introduced a new initiative allowing kids under 18 to ride for free on its Cascades line in Washington state. This program, the first of its kind in the national Amtrak system, aims to make train travel more accessible and affordable for families. It is funded by the Move Ahead Washington transportation package and the state's Climate Commitment Act (WSDOT) (AOL.com).

The free fare applies to all Amtrak Cascades trains and buses within Washington state. To qualify, children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and unaccompanied minors aged 13 to 15 are not eligible. Tickets must be obtained in advance, either through Amtrak's website, by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL, or at staffed stations, and cannot be acquired onboard or at ticket kiosks (Cascadia Daily News) (AOL.com).

This initiative is designed to encourage more young people and their families to experience train travel along the Interstate-5 corridor, providing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to driving. With one-way adult fares between Seattle and Vancouver, Washington starting at $27, the program aims to inspire a new generation to consider trains as a viable travel option (AOL.com).
