I organized a Chapel Hill community outreach project in October 2015 that helped a “Food Bank” that is a grass roots effort that serves the homeless and those in desperate need far out on the Key Peninsula.
I continue to help from friends willing to donate since Chapel Hill cannot continue to support this effort.
On Key Peninsula as you enter a very small place called Home you will see a small shabby double-wide trailer with a hand-made sign that says Bischoff Food Bank. Since seeing that sign I found out about this grass roots effort that is helping the very poor and needy without restrictions found at other food banks.
Founder Ross Bischoff (now passed), was a member of the Key Peninsula Lutheran Church. He started loading his pick-up truck with food and passing it out on Sundays. More and more people started bringing food for him to pass out as more & more of the local homeless stood in line to get food. Since that time his daughter Carol Larson has kept it going in her father’s name. A 501c3 non-profit this effort carries on run by 100% volunteers operating 5 days a week (closed Sun & Mon) serving over 2000 (20-30 families a day) people a month with over 100 that are homeless living in the surrounding woods. They also deliver food to the elderly shut-in’s and provide clothing and bedding when they can get it.
Unlike other Food Banks they accept all type of food, home canned, fresh and past the pull date. The recipients do not need to have a proof of address to receive the food and if the client comes in with clothes that are so soiled and smelly they will even wash their clothes.
In addition this “Food Bank” takes donations of more than food. They take most anything like children’s clothes and bedding (Sleeping bags, blankets & pillows, tents) to get the homeless prepared for the cold-wet winter. Toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste children’s books, shoes, clothes and of course money $$$.
I am asking friends beyond my church family to join me in the effort to help this neighboring community that serves so many needs to the poor. We in Gig Harbor have an opportunity to be good neighbors and help this Peninsula community. It is my faith mission and I will work with you to personally deliver your donations.
Please help me help Bischoff’s, will you?
Please call or email me.
My sincere love for my community,
Betty Perry
